"Is My Dog Normal?" — What Comparing Your Dog With Every Other Dog Really Tells You

Percentiles, plain language, and why we're making you wait for the honest version.

It might be the most common question dog owners ask. Your dog barks at the doorbell like the world is ending, or naps through thunderstorms, or loves every stranger, or trusts almost none of them. And quietly, in the back of your mind: Is this normal? Is it just my dog?

It's a fair question with a real, measurable answer. Not "your dog is anxious," full stop — but "your dog is more easily rattled than most dogs, and calmer than a few." That's a different, more useful kind of knowing. It moves you from a worry to a place on a map.

What a percentile actually means

Imagine lining up a thousand dogs from the least easily rattled to the most, then finding where your dog stands. If 70 dogs in a hundred are calmer and 30 are more reactive, your dog is around the 70th percentile for Emotional Reactivity. Higher than most. Not off the map, not alone — just further along than roughly seven dogs in ten.

That's all a percentile is: your dog's spot in the line. Put simply, the 70th percentile means that 70% of the dogs in the database score lower than your dog. It doesn't mean your dog is broken. Plenty of wonderful dogs live at both ends of every line.

But percentiles, spoken aloud, can sound colder than they are — "83rd percentile for Boldness" lands like a school grade. So on Dogmetry you'll mostly see the idea translated into gentle, everyday words: very similar to most dogs, somewhat different, clearly different. Same information, kinder delivery. A description of your dog, not a scoreboard.

The honest part: we're not showing norms yet

To tell you where your dog stands among all dogs, we need actual dogs to compare against — real ones, measured on the same questionnaire, the same way. And here's our rule, which we won't bend: Dogmetry will not switch on population percentiles until we have at least 500 dogs of genuine platform data. No borrowed numbers from old studies dressed up as our own. No estimates. When we tell you your dog sits above two-thirds of dogs, we'll mean two-thirds of real Dogmetry dogs, counted.

Until then, you get everything that doesn't depend on a crowd: your dog's real profile across the five traits, and one-to-one comparison — your dog next to a specific other dog, or your read next to a co-rater's. That works from dog one. The big "compared with all dogs" picture simply waits until the number behind it is honest.

A percentile built on fake data isn't a feature. It's a guess dressed up as science.

Why "all dogs," and not "dogs like yours"

One more decision worth explaining, because it surprises people: when norms arrive, we compare your dog against all dogs — never against a breed average.

That sounds backwards until you see the numbers. A 2022 study in Science of around 18,000 dogs found that breed explains only about 9% of the behavioural differences between individuals, with wide variation within every breed. A "breed norm" would be false precision — a tidy-looking number resting on a factor that barely moves the needle. Telling you your dog is bold "for a Labrador" would sound scientific and mostly mislead you. Comparing against every kind of dog is simply the more honest yardstick — the full range of dogs, which is where your dog actually lives.

So: is your dog normal? Almost certainly yes, in the only sense that matters — real dogs are scattered all along every line, and yours is one of them, somewhere specific and worth knowing. We'd just rather show you exactly where, once we can do it for real.
